Qualification Overview

The National Certificate in Agri Trade Processes (NQF Level 2) is designed to equip learners with foundational knowledge and skills in agricultural marketing, logistics, post-harvest handling, and customer service. It is aimed at individuals involved in the buying, selling, packaging, distribution, or retailing of agricultural products.

This qualification enables learners to participate effectively in the agricultural value chain, from farm gate to consumer, and supports employment in agri-processing, agro-logistics, cooperatives, and agri-markets.


Purpose of the Qualification

  • Provide learners with technical and soft skills to operate within agri-processing and agri-trade environments.

  • Support rural agro-enterprise development and market access

  • Enhance quality assurance, customer service, and distribution chain knowledge

  • Strengthen job readiness for careers in retail, agro-logistics, packhouses, warehouses, and cooperatives

  • Promote value-adding and reduce post-harvest losses in rural farming systems


Learning Outcomes

Learners who complete this qualification will be able to:

  • Understand and describe agri trade value chains

  • Handle and package agricultural products for sale or processing

  • Maintain quality and safety standards for perishable and non-perishable goods

  • Receive, store, and dispatch agricultural products

  • Perform stock control and basic inventory management

  • Apply customer service and communication principles in a trade context

  • Use appropriate agri-logistics tools, equipment, and infrastructure

  • Understand basic pricing, costing, and point-of-sale (POS) processes

  • Apply numeracy and literacy in workplace contexts


Qualification Structure (as per AgriSETA model)

1. Fundamentals (36 Credits)

  • Communication in the workplace (in English and one additional language)

  • Mathematical Literacy with application to trade and logistics

2. Core (70 Credits)

These are compulsory unit standards that focus on trade and logistics activities:

  • US 117242: Handle and store agro-products in a store or warehouse

  • US 117244: Receive, handle, and dispatch agricultural produce

  • US 117243: Maintain hygiene and safety in a food handling environment

  • US 116127: Monitor quality and condition of fresh produce

  • US 117245: Apply customer service techniques in agri-trade

  • US 117241: Demonstrate an understanding of agri-business operations

  • US 117246: Prepare agricultural produce for marketing

  • US 116115: Use and maintain basic tools and infrastructure

  • US 116096: Apply workplace health and safety standards

3. Electives (Minimum 18 Credits)

Learners can select unit standards that support career paths or enterprise goals, such as:

  • Basic business and cooperative practice

  • Perform basic point-of-sale (POS) transactions

  • Assist with promotional and merchandising activities

  • Assist with agro-processing tasks (e.g., cutting, drying, labelling)

Electives can be tailored depending on whether the learner works in:

a farm packhouse

a processing plant

an agricultural cooperative

or a retail agricultural outlet


Assessment & Certification

  • Formative Assessment: Written exercises, practical tasks, group activities

  • Summative Assessment: Portfolio of Evidence (PoE), final observation, knowledge test

  • Moderation: Internal & external as per AgriSETA/QCTO standards

  • Certification: National Certificate: Agri Trade Processes (NQF 2) upon successful completion

  • Farm assistants handling packaging, processing, or deliveries

  • Packhouse Assistant / Grader
